Stay
About the destination: Turin, popularly known as the city of the car, is located in the Piedmont region in northwest Italy. The river Po and the Alps circumscribe this beautiful city, which offers visitors a feast of baroque architecture, ornate art nouveau cafés and museum collections covering everything from Egyptology to contemporary art. The heart of the city since Roman times is based on the Piazza Castello, Castle Square, surrounded by arches, each built at different periods. Nearby, the royal palaces of the Savoy House, Palazzo Madama and Palazzo Reale, lie with modest splendour. If Florence has its Duomo, Turin has its Mole Antonelliana. Crowned with a massive dome and conical spiral, the high building is the symbol of the city. Go up the glass elevator to the observation deck to get the best view of the city and before sunset, a superb view of the neighbouring Alps. Turin has proved to be more than an industrial city. To get a sense of the city’s urban revival stroll along its beautiful porticoes for some fine shopping and stop to enjoy a Vermouth before being delighted by its delicious cuisine.

About the destination: Cairo, one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East, is the capital of Egypt. Cairo has been a centre of great importance to many civilisations, cultures and religions. From Pharaonic and Greco-Roman to Ottoman and European, and passing by Jewish, Christian, and Islamic, each of its identities has left a strong imprint on Cairo, thus making it one of the most fascinating cities in the world. The Giza Plateau, that includes the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, is the only remaining monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the country's most famous tourist attraction. The sheer mass of the pyramids is awe inspiring. Islamic Cairo, the centre of historic Cairo, is best done on foot. Located east of downtown, it is full of charming little mosques and water fountains. The most important sites to visit are the Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque, Khan el Khalili, the main bazaar, some historic mosques and displays of medieval architecture, as well as some of Cairo's Turkish baths or Hammams. No visit to Cairo is complete without seeing the Egyptian Museum. Exotic atmosphere, chaotic traffic, thousands of minarets, noise, charming people, Cairo is a fascinating city. Few cities in the world surpass Cairo in number of monuments or architectural styles. Cairo is not an ordinary city, Cairo is a whole world.

About the destination: Dubai is the most populous city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is a hive of activity and a cosmopolitan and modern city. The city of Dubai is split by a creek, with Deira on one side and Bur Dubai, the historical district, on the other. The luxury beach hotels are situated on the outskirts of the busy city center, in the area of Jumeirah. Dubai already exhibits some stunning architecture and it has the only 7-star hotel in the world, the highest building in the world, amazing beaches and luxury shopping centers. The Bastakiya Quarter, in the core of Dubai’s Old Town, is still traditional and evocative of Dubai’s past. Here you’ll find traditional Emirati houses, bustling souks, museums, galleries, and the only remaining piece of the old Dubai city wall. Another major attraction in Dubai is the Jumeirah Mosque, that although outside the Old Town, it is a wonderful example of traditional Islamic architecture. Dubai is forward-looking city in constant development yet it has managed to retain its traditions and culture. So it's fair to say that Dubai is one of the most exciting places in the world.

About the destination: Chaotic, cosmopolitan Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is India's commercial and cultural center and its most dynamic city. The city's colorful mix of cultures, ethnicities, religions and languages makes it the most cosmopolitan city in India. Bollywood or the Indian Hollywood is here in Mumbai and hundreds of films are made every year in Mumbai studios. Mumbai is a city of contrasts. The skyscrapers of its skyline, the Gothic and Art Déco architecture of its colonial past and the Indo-Saracenic buildings of the city’s more traditional side give it an eclectic vibe that makes the city quite unique. There is a lot to see in Mumbai, but the main sights are concentrated in South Mumbai. The main attractions to see in Mumbai are the Gateway of India on the seafront, where you can take a day trip to the famous Elephanta Caves, the Prince of Wales Museum, which houses a lot of artefacts worth seeing, the Jehangir Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Banganga Tank, the Walkeshwar temples, the Hanging Gardens, the Parsi Towers of Silence, Mahatma Gandhi's residence, now converted into a museum, and the Bhau Daji Lad Museum. Exotic Mumbai is a fantastic and exciting destination and India's most culturally active, lively and happening city.

Stay
About the destination: Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is the capital of West Bengal and the second largest city in India after Mumbai. Abject poverty mix inexplicably with crumbling British Raj-era gems, sprawling gardens and historical colleges. Long known as the cultural capital of India, Kolkata continues to spawn generations of poets, writers, film producers and Nobel Prize winners. The city sprawls along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, a tributary of the Ganges, which divides it from Howrah on the western bank. For travelers, the most relevant parts of Kolkata are south of the Howrah Bridge in the areas around BBD Bagh and Chowringhee. Kolkata is a huge city with a lot to see but some of the main attractions are the Eden Gardens, Fort William, Victoria Memorial, Nakhoda Mosque, the largest mosque in Kolkata, Shobhabajar Rajbari, Parashnath Jain Temple and the Birla Temple, the largest in Kolkata and worth a visit. If Bangalore is the Seattle of India, than Kolkata is the sub-continent’s London. It is an 'in your face' city that shocks and charms the unsuspecting visitor. If your trip only allows for a visit of one or two of India's metropolitan cities, than definitely consider placing Kolkata on your itinerary. Love it or hate it, you definitely won't forget the city on the Hooghly.

14. Dublin
Stay
About the destination: Dublin has been the setting for many novels and it’s no wonder since its written tradition goes back to 800 A.D. with The Book of Kells, which is now on show at Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest university. The city is the birthplace for many literary figures such as Joyce, Beckett, Yeats, Shawn and Wilde to name a few. The city’s Georgian elegance blends perfectly with the medieval and modern architecture that gives Dublin its distinctive personality. One can’t deny that Dublin is a cultural city; the UNESCO designated Ireland’s capital as the city of literature in 2010. Culture vultures are also spoilt for choice when it comes to museums and galleries. From the National Museum of Ireland and the National Library to the National Gallery and the cute Little Museum of Dublin containing the lecturn that US president JFK used to address the National Parliament in 1963, there is plenty to absorb. Not forgetting of course the magnificent Dublin Castle dating back to the 13th century. Aside from its glorious riches, the best thing about this city is its people. Dubliners are friendly, warm, surprisingly outgoing and witty, even more so after a couple of pints of Guinness. In its more than 1000 pubs one makes friends easily. It should be mandatory for tourists to spend some time in a pub since it is one of the most memorable experiences of a visit to Ireland. Dublin is as well a young city, it has one of the youngest population in Europe, around half of its inhabitants are believed to be under the age of 25. This fact has made the city vibrant, dynamic, energetic and ambitious. Dublin is overflowing with funky bars, sophisticated restaurants and lively clubs, the epicenter being the buzzing Temple Bar area. Live music is a religion in Ireland and Dublin is its mecca. The city’s live music scene is superb and has given the world a number of global musical superstars from U2 and Westlife to The Script and Sinead O’Connor. Everyone is welcome in this nowadays multicultural city, but beware, Dublin, as its people, is so charismatic and infectious that you may never want to leave.
